Academy Launches Campaign to Highlight Perils of Decorative Lenses
As consumers begin to plan their Halloween costumes, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is launching an aggressive, multimedia education campaign highlighting the dangers of decorative contact lenses obtained without a prescription. The effort was spurred in part by a Council Advisory Recommendation and ongoing member reports about patients treated for decorative lens-related injuries and infections. The national initiative includes a mix of partnerships with national organizations and individual state societies, plus traditional media outreach, social media promotion and online ads. In addition, the Academy has developed a number of free resources physicians and others can use to educate their patients and communities. These include a poster, video public-service announcements, template PowerPoint presentations, template social media posts and more. Physicians can access resources on the Academy website. Patients can be directed to the EyeSmart® website.
