CDC Reports New Cases of Fungal Endophthalmitis

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating an ongoing outbreak of fungal endophthalmitis. While an initial notification had linked this to Brilliant Blue G (BBG), apparently from a single source (Franck's Pharmacy), there now appear to be cases unrelated to BBG. The CDC is requesting the Academy's assistance in identifying possible cases of infection.

Benjamin Park, M.D. of the CDC Mycotic Diseases Branch notes, “Investigation has revealed that patients underwent invasive ocular procedures (e.g. vitrectomy, corneal surgery, or intravitreal injection) and subsequently developed symptoms consistent with fungal endophthalmitis. Because this outbreak is ongoing and the vehicle of contamination has not been definitively identified, we are working to find additional cases and understand the extent of this outbreak.”

CDC requests the assistance of Academy members in identifying possible cases of infection. If you, or your institution, have seen any cases of post-procedural fungal endophthalmitis, from August 24, 2011 — present, please contact CDC investigators, Drs. Rachel Smith and Christina Mikosz either by email at vih9@cdc.gov or by phone at 404.639.7738.
