High myopia linked to anatomic failure after macular hole surgery

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

This large retrospective review compared outcomes of macular hole surgery with three-day prone positioning in highly myopic eyes and non–highly myopic eyes. Outcomes were satisfactory in highly myopic eyes, with an initial closure rate of 83% and mean improvement in visual acuity of 0.41±0.39 logMAR. However, these outcomes were less favorable than in control eyes, both anatomically (closure rate, 95.7%; P = 0.045) and functionally (mean VA improvement, 0.68±0.34 logMAR; P < 0.001). The authors conclude that longer axial length may increase the risk of anatomic failure. Ophthalmology, June 2014
