MRSA-related orbital cellulitis has distinctive presentation

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

This retrospective case review of 15 patients with culture-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) orbital cellulitis finds that this condition presents with distinctive clinical and radiographic features. Unlike typical orbital infections, these patients don’t present with antecedent upper respiratory illness or preceding traumatic injury or paranasal sinus disease. Most had lid swelling. Other features included lacrimal gland abscess or dacryoadenitis (5 of 15 patients) or multiple orbital abscesses (4 of 15 patients). They suggest clinicians should consider immediate surgical drainage of any focal abscess and appropriate empiric antibiotic coverage in these patients. Ophthalmology, June 2012
