Pediatric HSV Infection Commonly Misdiagnosed

From the American Academy of Ophthalmology

This retrospective case series of 53 patients (57 eyes) aged 16 and younger with HSV keratitis (HSK), HSV blepharoconjunctivitis (HBC) or both, finds that 30 percent were initially misdiagnosed. Median age at onset was 5 years old. Of the 39 eyes with keratitis, 74 percent had stromal disease, 79 percent had corneal scarring and 26 percent had vision of 20/40 or worse at last visit. Eighty percent of all patients had recurrent disease. The authors recommend treatment with oral acyclovir, with dosage adjustment as the child grows. Ophthalmology, October 2012
