Optometric Surgery Proposal Dies in Massachusetts
From the American Academy of Ophthalmology
Optometry’s latest attempt for expanded scope of practice in Massachusetts recently failed as the legislature concluded its 2011-2012 session. The legislation would have allowed optometrists to perform non-invasive surgery. The Board of Registration in Optometry would have had the authority to define non-invasive surgery had the bill passed. In addition, the legislation would have granted optometrists authority to prescribe all oral medications and certain narcotics to diagnose, prevent, correct, manage or treat ocular diseases, including glaucoma. The Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and the Massachusetts Medical Society partnered with the Academy to fight the legislation. This was the fifth consecutive legislative session in which optometry sought expanded privileges in Massachusetts.
