David B. Cano, MD, receives the James W. Clower, Jr, MD, Community Service Award

ORLANDO – The Florida Society of Ophthalmology (FSO), the preeminent professional association for medical and osteopathic doctors who specialize in vision care, is pleased to announce that David B. Cano, MD, received the James W. Clower, Jr, MD, Community Service Award at its annual meeting, Masters in Ophthalmology 2012, held June 22-24 in Orlando, FL.

Established in honor of James W. Clower, Jr, MD, this annual award is meant to recognize a Florida-based ophthalmologist who has made the greatest contribution of time and service to his or her community.

Dr. Cano is a board-certified ophthalmologist and shares a private group practice, Cano & Manning Eye Center, PLLC, with his wife Dr. Lauree Manning. They have been in practice together for over 15 years and have two children, Robert age 14 and Andrew age 12.  He is proud to have served on the FSO Board for over a decade.  He is serving as the first Chairman of the recently formed FOR EYE Care Foundation of the FSO.  He serves on the board of the Lighthouse for the Blind of the Palm Beaches and volunteers his clinical and surgical skills at the Vision Clinic of the Caridad Center in Palm Beach County. He is involved in teaching with Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) both at state and national meetings.

In 2000, he won the FSO’s Outstanding Young Ophthalmologist Leadership Award.  Dr. Cano has served as the FSO Vice President (2001-2002), President-Elect (2006), and President (2007), and has been an FSO Board Member since 1998.

Dr. Cano received a bachelors degree from the University of Florida and a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed an internship at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, and then completed the Ophthalmology Residency Program at Case Western University. Finally, Dr. Cano completed a fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, Refractive and Anterior Segment Surgery at The Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Melbourne, Australia.
