Periodontal Disease Linked to AMD Risk in Middle-Aged Patients
From the American Academy of Ophthalmology
Investigators analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to determine if periodontal disease, a common chronic infectious/inflammatory disease that peaks in prevalence in late middle age, is independently associated with AMD. After adjustment for confounding factors, the authors found that patients age 60 and younger had twice the risk of developing AMD if they had periodontal disease; however, there was no increased risk among those older than 60.
