Investigators evaluated the effect of lutein/zeaxanthin supplementation on macular pigment optical density (MPOD) and retinal function in 112 patients with early AMD. Subjects were randomized to receive 10 mg lutein, 2 mg lutein, lutein (10 mg)+zeaxanthin (10 mg) or placebo daily for 2 years. Supplementation with lutein and zeaxanthin increased MPOD compared with placebo (P<0.05). Lutein (10 mg or 20 mg) significantly enhanced retinal sensitivity compared with the placebo arm, which showed no increase in retinal sensitivity. The authors conclude that the effect of macular pigment augmentation on AMD progression warrants further investigation. British Journal of Ophthalmology, March 2015
