This randomized, double-blind trial finds that one-month of omega-3 fatty acid intake significantly reduces the signs and symptoms of dry eye. Subjects included 64 patients aged 45 to 90 years, 33 of which received two capsules of omega-3 fatty acids daily, while the remaining patients received two capsules of medium-chain triglyceride oil daily. At one month, tear break-up time improved 71 percent compared with 3.3 percent in the placebo group. Improvement also was observed in the secondary outcome measures, Ocular Surface Disease Index score and Schirmer's score.
